POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

Most effective therapies use both pharmacological and psychological approaches. Antidepressants including fluoxetine, fluvoxamine and sertraline have all been shown to improve intrusive and explosive episodes, emotional numbing and recollection of the event. The SSRIs also help in avoidant behavior, while fluoxetine has been shown to reduce hyperarousal states that patients often experience.

Imipramine, desipramine and amitriptyline have been found to decrease intrusive episodes as well as depression but they do not affect avoidant behavior. Mood stabilizers have been used with some success, as have the benzodiazepines to relieve anxiety symptoms. Benzodiazepines should be used with caution in PTSD as patients may develop benzodiazepine dependency.

Cognitive behavioural therapy involving imaging and exposure can be an effective approach to treating posttraumatic stress disorder.
