Diagnosing Depressive Disorders

Depression with Melancholic Features

These patients exhibit the classical symptoms of severe depression: early morning awakening, feeling worse in the morning, feeling guilty, appetite and weight loss. Classically, as well, mood does not improve when something happens that they would normally enjoy, and they take little pleasure in their usual activities, including sex. Melancholic features are common in patients who develop their first severe depression in mid-life, but it can occur with any episode.
