Diagnosing Depressive Disorders

Depression with Catatonic Features

Patients may show signs of either immobility or stupor, or, alternatively, purposeless hyperactivity. Extreme negativism may be present, along with prominent posturing, mannerisms or grimacing, and they may repeat someone else's words or phrases, or mimic another's gestures as well. With greater use of antidepressants - and more effective antidepressant therapy - depression with catatonic features has become much less common and it is unusual to see such severely ill patients in clinical practice today.
