ANXIETY DISORDERS
DUE TO GENERAL MEDICAL CONDITION
Criteria
Generally speaking, medical conditions do not cause anxiety disorders
but it is important to identify those which do. The most common medical
conditions leading to symptoms of anxiety are hyperthyroidism and other
endocrine disorders. If a patient has prominent anxiety, compulsions,
obsessions or panic attacks severe enough to impair work, social or personal
functioning, and on history, physical and laboratory findings, a medical
cause can be identified, the patient meets the criteria for anxiety disorder
due to a general medical condition.
(Of note: This diagnosis
is not valid if symptoms occur solely during a delirium).
