Diagnosing Anxiety Disorder

GENERALIZED ANXIETY DISORDER

Perhaps because symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are unfocused and low-key - the proverbial "worry-wart" type of syndrome - GAD may not be readily apparent. Moreover, everybody worries to some extent and worries can be hard to control. If a patient experiences excessive anxiety and worries about several events or activities more than half of the time over a period of at least six months, they meet the criteria for GAD.

In addition, the patient should have three or more of the following symptoms,

feelings of being restless, edgy, keyed up
tiring easily
trouble concentrating
irritability
increased muscle tension
trouble sleeping
